Endorsed: What Do You Endorse?

Everyone watch that Eagles game on Sunday!?  I actually didn’t (HTTR)*, but many of you probably did.  We are quickly approaching the Super Bowl, one of the biggest sports events in the US; one of the most likely events to get a sports figure an endorsement from a company who makes a product or provides a service.  *(This means “Hail To The Redskins”)

Endorsements are great for those who receive them, but they do come with some responsibilities. Those endorsed bear the mark of the company endorsing them and anything they do is instantly tied to the company. If an endorsee misbehaves it has a negative impact on the company who endorses them. If the endorsee does something great, the company reaps the benefits (or gets the glory) for that event. Stay endorsed for long enough and you become the face of the company you are endorsed by. when they see you, they see the brand, and when they see the brand, they see you.

You Have an Endorsement Deal!

But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a guardian, for in Christ Jesus you are all sons of God, through faith. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise.

Galatians 3:25-29

An Honor and A Challenge

Jesus has taken you under His authority. You have, for all intent and purposes, put on His jersey, logo, active-wear, sandals, etc. You are wearing the mark of Christ and now everything you do is intrinsically tied to Jesus. You are not you anymore. You are viewed as a representative of Christ. When people see what you do they will ascribe that to what they presume Jesus is about (much like the celebrity under an endorsement). You are branded with Jesus and Jesus’ brand is impacted by your decisions.

The Contract (overcoming the Devil is in the details)

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints. Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving. For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. Therefore do not become partners with them; for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord. Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light. Therefore it says,

“Awake, O sleeper,
    and arise from the dead,
and Christ will shine on you.”

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Ephesians 5:1-21

This is the challenging part of the endorsement. Whenever someone is endorsed, they reap the benefits (we are heirs with Christ! We are adopted as children!) that company offers, but that endorsee also has heavy responsibilities to whom they represent. Upholding that is a challenge and a challenge that cannot be taken lightly. The goal is to be imitators of Christ, that we would be so much like that which we represent there is no distinction between the two. But we are more than just someone endorsed- we are spokesman, we are ambassadors!

We are Ambassadors

Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.  For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

2 Corinthians 5:20-21

God calls us into relationship with Him, gives us His endorsement, calls us to put on His logo only, makes us owners of the company, and calls us to represent Him to the world, a world which so desperately needs Him. We are ambassadors. We are dignitaries of God’s Kingdom. We are the franchise quarterback (or the backup if you are the Eagles - GO FOLES!) who the team is identified by. God has put us in a place of honor so that we might represent Him and His son, Jesus, that we might bring them glory.

We can only do this when we are properly representing the one whose endorsement we wear each and every day. Everything we do, say, think, buy, read, share, comment is an endorsement of some kind, EVERYTHING! Take a look through your day, your life, your job, your hobbies, and ask in each situation, who are you representing? What are you, yourself, endorsing? Are your personal endorsements something that brings glory to the one we know endorses us?
